How to Have a Baby in Stardew Valley
Having children is a rather common feature in simulation games. Of course, the critically acclaimed Stardew Valley provides the player with this ability if you wish to expand your family. Here is how to have kids in Stardew Valley.
Overview
The children in Stardew Valley don't provide many gameplay advantages and are mostly "cosmetic," as it makes your Farmhouse more lively.
Players can have up to two children, one boy and one girl. The first child will be a random gender while the second one will be the other.
If your spouse is of the same gender, you will adopt them instead. The mechanics behind adoption are identical to having biological children.
How to have kids in Stardew Valley
There are a few requirements that need to be met before you can have children:
- You must be married for at least 7 days.
- You must maintain a 10-heart relationship with your spouse.
- Your Farmhouse must be upgraded for the second time, which adds the two new rooms.

Once these requirements are met, your spouse will have an approximately 5% chance of asking you if you wish to have a child. This will occur after you go to bed for the night.
When asked about having a child, you can answer "yes" or "not now." Selecting "not now" will continue the cycle of a 5% chance of your spouse asking for a child every night.
If you select "yes," the baby will be born after 14 days, appearing in the crib in the nursery room.
Once the baby ages to the toddler stage, your spouse will once again have a 5% chance of asking for a child.
Children's growth stages
Children never grow up past the toddler stage. There are four stages to a child's growth:
- Stage 1: The child will always be sleeping as a baby in the crib.
- Stage 2: The child will still be a baby, but will be awake during waking hours. You can interact with the child, which will show an animation of your character tossing the baby in the air. This will improve your relationship level with your child.
- Stage 3: The child will crawl around the house and play with their tors. They will return to the crib automatically at night.
- Stage 4: The child will reach the toddler stage. They will dash around the house and you can interact with them to increase their relationship level. The child will never grow past this stage.
When the child reaches the toddler stage, your spouse will take your children to events such as the Stardew Valley Fair or the Egg Festival.
How to dismiss kids in Stardew Valley
If for some cruel reason, you wish to no longer have kids anymore, you can offer a Prismatic Shard to the Dark Shrine of Selfishness inside the Witch's Hut. The children will turn into doves and they will be gone forever.
Dismissed children cannot return, however your spouse will once again have a 5% chance of asking for a child again.
The act of dismissing children has no effect on your relationship with your spouse, however, it will unlock some rather malicious and eerie Easter Eggs:
- You may receive a phone call: ""You place the receiver to your ear, and are met with a roiling, abrasive static. But wait… beneath it all, you can make out something else… an otherworldly voice… 'Y-O-U H-A-V-E F-O-R-S-A-K-E-N U-S'"
- If you are in the standard farm, watching TV on Fall 26 and choosing "???" will show an Ancient Doll on the TV screen with the message "You've brought this upon yourself… now I'm free… Hee hee hee!" An Ancient Doll will emerge from the TV. From here on out, a cursed Ancient Doll will attack players in front of the Dark Shrine of Selfishness. Triggering this event will no longer cause the above message to appear on TV.
- The player may occasionally catch an Ancient Doll while fishing on the Four-Corner Farms.
- If multiple children have been turned into doves, there's a 15% chance they'll fly pass The Summit.
